What Is a Lithophane? The Photo Gift That Only Appears When the Light Comes On

Hold it in daylight and you see gentle ridges in white material. Switch the light on behind it, and suddenly — the photo appears, in glowing detail. That's a lithophane, and it's one of the most quietly magical things a 3D printer can make.

How does a lithophane work?

A lithophane is an image carved in varying thickness. Thin areas let more light through (bright parts of your photo); thick areas block it (shadows). Our software converts every pixel of your photo into a precise thickness, and the printer builds it layer by layer — 0.1 mm at a time. No ink, no printing on top: the picture is the material.

Why they make extraordinary gifts

  • The reveal moment — the gift looks abstract until the light comes on. People film it.
  • It's their photo — a wedding, a pet, a grandparent — not a generic ornament.
  • It lives on the wall or bedside, not in a drawer — our LED hexagon photo panels glow in any colour you choose.

What photos work best?

Good contrast and a clear subject work beautifully: faces, pets, wedding shots. Very dark or blurry photos lose detail — and this is exactly why we send you a free digital proof before printing anything. If your photo won't shine, we'll tell you and help you choose a better one.
